Training

Training Services NSW has created the Aboriginal Initiatives unit to manage a number of programs. These programs focus on providing workplace mentoring, improving access to employment and training and creating business opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, in partnership with Charles Darwin University (CDU), has offered the following courses in Applied Social Science: Diploma of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges (YATSI1); Bachelor of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Advocacy (BATSIA); Associate Degree of Applied Social Science (XASSO1), Bachelor of Applied Social Science (WASSO1).

This qualification reflects the role of entry level community services workers who support individuals through the provision of person-centred services.

The Diploma of Business Studies is designed to reflect general business degree course objectives and build towards the graduate attributes of Charles Darwin University. These attributes describe creative, flexible and socially responsible graduates who are able to acquire, understand and apply concepts and knowledge with a high level of skills in communication, leadership and team work.

This qualification reflects the role of personnel working in community coordination and facilitation, which focuses on fostering, promoting and supporting community development, particularly in rural communities that are engaged in land management activities.

IBA serves, partners and invests with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who want to enhance their business skills

Indigenous community fellowship is aimed at Indigenous people working in community organisations who wish to undertake a research project and build their research capability.

The IMW and its strategic partners are dedicated to the development and advancement of culturally appropriate and inclusive geospatial technologies for Indigenous leadership, agencies, and communities to support Indigenous rights and interests.  

The Northern Territory Council of Social Service (NTCOSS) provides a calendar of training for community or not-for-profit sector organisations. The programs specifically include training in governance and financial management.

Northern Volunteering provides a range of training opportunities for potential and current volunteers, organisations, volunteer managers and coordinators.

The Virtual Advisor Program gives free training to people who want to set up an online business or improve their current skills to make the most of the Internet. The program is available to all small to medium enterprises and non-profits that identify as Indigenous and are located in regional, rural and remote areas of Australia.

TAFE SA offers training across more than 80 activity and industry-related areas with a wide range of courses and flexible study options. TAFE SA also has an Aboriginal Access Centre that facilitates education, training and support for Aboriginal students across 17 sites of TAFE SA, including regional and remote South Australia.

Jobs Victoria – through the Victorian Department of Jobs, Precincts and Regions (DJPR) – has provided funding to VCOSS and the Future Social Services Institute (FSSI) to deliver the Community Traineeship Pilot Program to young Victorian job seekers, to address youth unemployment and increased workforce demand in the community services industry.
