The Bigambal Native Title Aboriginal Corporation holds native title in trust for the benefit of the native title holders.
The Bigambal Native Title Aboriginal Corporation is governed by a Board of Directors. The corporation has put target strategies in place aimed as responding to identified risks and challenges. These are supported through effective leadership and oversight from their Executive Director, in conjunction with good governance from the Board.
Prior to the determination, there were three earlier native title determination applications lodged or filed by the Bigambal People. They were all either discontinued or dismissed.
On 18 October 2016, the Federal Court of Australia made order splitting the Bigambal application into Parts A and B, with Part A comprising the majority of the claim area.
On 1 December 2016, Reeves J recognised the native title rights and interests of the Bigambal people in Part A. Part B comprises six lots within the claim area in relation to which the Bigambul Application disputed whether the grants of those lots resulted in extinguishment.
The determination area covers approximately 20,000 square kilometres. It includes country watered by the Weir River and its tributaries. Its southern limit id defined in party by the Macintrye River a portion of the Dumaresq River. The Moonie River defines part of its western boundary. In the north, it extends to encompass Western Creek, and in the east, Cecil Plans and Texas.
