Wakeyama (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation
The Wakeyama (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation administers the native title rights and interests recognised over Sassie Island on behalf of the Warraber, Poruma and Iama Peoples. Their ownership of Sassie Island was recognised in the Warraber, Poruma and Iama Peoples determination of 2005.
This determination arose from a native title claim first lodged in December 2003 over Sassie (or Long Island) and several adjacent islets. This claim was successfully mediated over two years. All parties recognised the Warraber, Poruma and Iama peoples’ native title rights to:
- Exclusive possession of the land, and
- Non-exclusive use of the water and things in it for person, domestic and non-commercial communal needs.
This agreement was approved by the Federal Court in the Warraber, Poruma and Iama Peoples determination.
