Ugar Kem Le Ged Zeuber Er Kep Le
(Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation
The Ugar Kem Le Ged Zeuber Er Kep Le (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation administers the native title rights and interests of the Ugar people. The Ugar people’s ownership of Ugar (Stephen) Island, Campbell Island and Pearce Cay in the Torres Strait was recognised in the Ugar (Stephen Islanders) #1 determination.
This determination arose from a claim of native title filed in June 1996. Joseph Wacando Stephen (Jnr) was the original applicant in this claim. Following his death, Napau Pedro Stephen proceeded as the named applicant on behalf of the Ugar People. This claim was successfully negotiated by all parties. All parties agreed to recognise the native title rights of the Ugar people, including:
- Exclusive possession of the land, and
- Non-exclusive use of the water and things in it for personal, domestic or non-commercial communal needs.
This agreement was approved by the Federal Court in May 2005 in the Ugar (Stephen Islanders) #1 determination. In addition to this determination, the Ugar Kem Le Ged Zeuber Er Kep Le (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation also administers two Indigenous Land Use Agreements.
