Overview

The Gebaralgal (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation administers native title rights and interests recognised in the native title determination Gebara Islanders #1 over Gebara Island (also known as Gabba Island or Two Brothers Island). Gebara Islanders #1 determination arose from an application for determination of native title lodged by Michealangelo Newie, Sam Kris, John Levi, John Loveman, Dick Peters and Steven Peters on behalf of the Gebar applicants in June 1996. The sole respondent was the State of Queensland. The parties mediated the issues which arose from the initial application. This agreement recognised native title rights over the uninhabited island, including:

The Federal Court granted the orders sought over Gebara without a full hearing of the determination application in December 2004.
