Dauanalgaw (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation
The Dauanalgaw (Torres Strait Islanders) Corporation administers the native title rights and interests of the Dauan people. Dauan is the smallest of the top western cluster of islands along with Boigu, and Saibai. The resulting determination, Dauan People recognised that:
- the Dauan People were the common law holders of the land
- The communal and group rights and interests which comprise native title ensure they may posses, occupy, use and enjoy the land subject to their traditional laws and customs.
The consent determination also recognised the rights and interests of other Indigenous peoples in the area, entitling some to have access to the determination area for traditional purposes.
While claiming this land, the Dauan people negotiated an agreement with the Queensland government, Telstra Corporation and Ergon Energy over infrastructure work on their island. The Dauanalgaw Corporation currently administers three Indigenous Land Use Agreements on behalf of the Dauan people.
