Overview

The Birriah Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC holds land in trust for the Birriah people of northeast Queensland. Their non-exclusive native title rights and interests were recognised in the Birriah People determination on 23 March 2016.

The determination recognised the Birriah people as the traditional owners of 9,485 square kilometres of land and waters between Mackay, Charters Towers and Townsville. This area includes the townships of Ravenswood, Collinsville and Scottville.

Birriah Elder Algon Walsh Jnr said on the day of the determination, “Having the legal right to once again to be able to speak for our country and access our country returns some of the dignity and self-esteem that was taken away from us as Birriah People. Where once there was nothing but suffering, hardship and humiliation, there is now a new beginning for my children and their children who come after them to build on.”
